How to make a transparent PNG

A transparent PNG keeps the subject and drops the backdrop. It is the file you want for logos, stickers, and product shots on any template.

What “transparent” actually means

The PNG stores an alpha channel: some pixels are see-through. Put that file on a red story or a photo collage and the holes stay holes. A white-looking “transparent” JPEG is just a white box waiting to embarrass you on a dark theme.

Browsers, Instagram (as a layer in a design tool), and slide decks all understand PNG alpha. Email clients and some CMS fields are pickier — test once.

From a photo versus from a logo

Photos need a mask. AI background removal is the fast path; hair and glass still need a zoom-in. Logos that already sit on white are easier, but watch for drop shadows that should either stay or go, not half-survive.

Generated FLUX images often include a fake studio. Cut that studio off before you call the asset a sticker.

Make the file

Do this on the canvas you will design with, not in a throwaway tab. The cutout should drop onto text, shapes, and brand colors immediately so you know the edges work.

Export once as the master transparent asset. Flattened, colored versions are children of that master.

Place the image on the canvas.
Run background removal.
Inspect edges at 200%, especially type and thin handles.
Set a checkerboard or contrasting color behind it to confirm alpha.

Edge quality that holds up on social

Halos come from leftover backdrop color. A slightly tighter mask or a 1px brand-colored stroke hides them on feed posts. Do not blur a wordmark to hide a bad mask.

If you need the cutout on many sizes — 4:5, 9:16, 16:9 — export the transparent master large and place it; do not remask three times.

Where you will use it

Logos in the brand kit, product stacks on sale posts, emoji-like stickers on Stories, merch mockups. Anywhere the backdrop should come from the layout, not from the camera.

Keep the file in a workspace so scheduling and remix pull the same asset.

Master = transparent PNG. Post = maybe flattened PNG on a color.
Never save transparency as JPEG.
Re-run removal after a heavy crop; do not stretch an old mask.
